LEIBNIZ UNIVERSITY HANNOVER + WASEDA UNIVERSITY 2024 WORKSHOP @

From May 27 to June 6, 2024, a two-week workshop was held in collaboration with students from the University of Hanover, focusing on the theme of regional shrinkage in the town of Manazuru, Kanagawa Prefecture.

The workshop site, Manazuru, is notable for having established its own design code known as the “Standards of Beauty,” which sets it apart as a uniquely planned town.

During the two-week program, all participants visited Manazuru on May 28 and 29 for on-site fieldwork. The investigation was based out of Manazuru Shuppan (Manazuru Publishing), which served as the central hub for our activities during the visit.

On the first day, after receiving an overview of the town at Manazuru Shuppan, students were divided into mixed German-Japanese teams based on their pre-selected research topics. Each team then went out into the town to conduct more detailed fieldwork related to their topic.

As part of this research, teams also mapped vacant houses within their assigned sites. These individual mappings were later compiled to create a comprehensive “Vacant House Map” of the central area of Manazuru.

On the second day, we gathered once again at Manazuru Shuppan and were given a guided tour of the town. During the tour, we had the opportunity to visit the residence of Mr. Fujii, an architect based in Manazuru.

After the tour, participants returned to their respective teams to finalize their research based on their assigned topics, engaging in discussions with faculty members for further refinement.

After completing the fieldwork, each team began considering what kinds of proposals could be developed based on the information gathered during the investigation. Through discussions involving professors and students from other teams, each group refined the direction of their proposals and proceeded with preparations for the final presentation held on June 6.

On the final day, each team presented their proposals using a variety of media, including models, posters, photographs, and drawings. The presentations were held in a public space within the university, where not only workshop participants but also students from other research labs joined in for the reviews.

The proposals ranged widely—from renovation plans to monumental interventions—demonstrating the rich diversity of approaches that can be taken toward a single town. At the same time, the process revealed not only the differences in perspectives but also the shared themes and commonalities among the teams’ ideas.

By addressing the issue of regional shrinkage—a pressing reality faced by both Japan and Germany today—the two-week collaboration fostered a strong sense of mutual understanding and empathy among participants. This shared focus allowed for a highly productive and meaningful experience throughout the joint workshop.
